clyneManchester United have been handed a massive boost in their ongoing pursuit of Nathaniel Clyne as the defender revealed his future at Southampton future in uncertain.

The 23-year-old has been on the Red Devils’ radar, reports ESPN as their manager Louis van Gaal is keen on adding the right-back to the squad. United have Rafael as the only recognised player in the squad in that position.

Clyne’s contract at St Mary’s Stadium runs down at the end of the next season and has not signed a new deal. He had a flying start of this term and has impressed so far with his display for the Saints.

The full-back admitted that his he will not decide his future until April, which has now alerted United who are looking to sign him.

“We will wait until April. I’m still negotiating my contract with my agent and the club,” Clyne said, as reported by Sky Sports.

Ronald Koeman has inspired Southampton, which has seen the South Coast club are in top four of the table. The Saints are third in the table with 42 points from 22 games, two points ahead of fourth place United.

Clyne admitted that his and his side’s focus this season will be to qualify for the Champions League next season. The defender has urged his teammates to remain focused and continue their form in order to finish in top four.

“We have got a good side. We know that we can continue the good run of league form that we’re in,” Southampton defender said.

“We had some tough away games but we got the wins, so we’re going to start again next game against Swansea.”

United have already signed Luke Shaw from Southampton last summer and Van Gaal is hoping to add his former teammate to his squad. Should the Red Devils sign Clyne, he would not only improve squad depth, but also increase competition for the right-back position as well.
