Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya’s agent has claimed that his client’s only priority at the moment is to sign a contract extension with the Catalan club, but if the agreement cannot be reached, then the defender would seek for other alternatives.

In October, we reported that Liverpool are interested in Montoya, who has had a hard time in getting regular games at Barcelona. That is obvious of course, as it was always going to be hard for the youngster to replace Brazilian Dani Alves straightaway.

At his age, any young player wants to get more game time and Montoya is of no exception, but the problem is, he is willing to wait. The defender recently told the reporters:

“There is no hurry for me to sign a new deal. I am at the best club in the world and I learn each day from Dani Alves. I believe that the negotiations are on the way but without pressure.”

Barcelona are also not willing to sell him and the Catalan clubs are equally hopeful that the defender will sign a new deal shortly.

Liverpool probably need a solid and young right-back to replace Glen Johnson, whose form has been inconsistent at times this season. Brendan Rodgers doesn’t see home grown defenders like Martin Kelly and Andre Wisdom – both played at right-back – as natural full-backs.

Yesterday, we reported that Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Mexican defender Hiram Mier, but should an opportunity arise, the Reds would likely to make move for Montoya only.

“Montoya’s contract expires in June 2014. Obviously the first option is to negotiate his contract with Barcelona,” said Jose Maria Orobitg, the player’s agent.

“Montoya wants to find an agreement with the Blaugrana. It is his first choice and only if the agreement cannot be done, then the player will look for other options.”

At the moment, it seems like Montoya will sign a new deal with Barcelona, sooner or later, but as his agent said to LaRoma24.it there is also a possibility that the defender could look for options elsewhere. In that case, England and Italy could be his possible destinations.
