According to reports from the trusted Gianluca Di Marzio website, Manchester United are yet to make an offer to Italian giants Roma for the €40m rated Chelsea and Manchester City target Mehdi Benatia. With Louis Van Gaal is desperate need to strengthen his defense and with only a handful of world class defenders available in the transfer market, the Red Devils are on the lookout for a quality centre back.

Roma’s Benatia is one such defender who future at the Giallorossi remains unclear. The Moroccan has been linked with Chelsea and Manchester City throughout the summer but the latter is set to pull out as they are confident to land Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala for €35m. Chelsea’s interest too has died down over the past few weeks which would provide United a great chance to take advantage of the current situation.

With Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic all leaving the club to pursue their career elsewhere, Van Gaal has a tough task on his hands to fill in the void at the backline.  Moreover Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp had earlier dismissed United’s plans to sign World Cup winner Mats Hummels from the German outfit.

The report from Di Marzio claims should the Old Trafford outfit, who have a sizeable transfer kitty, make an attempt to sign the 27 year old, Roma would be willing to listen and examine the proposal. However Rudi Garcia’s have made it clear that they won’t conduct business for anything less than €35m. We had reported yesterday that the Wolves would part with their prized asset after they are reportedly closing in on Olympiacos defender Konstantinos Manolas.
