Although there are no certainties that these figures are spot on, the data collected by Football Manager tend to be extremely accurate and based on direct information from clubs and reputed media outlets.
There has been plenty of discussions in the past that a wage bill has an important say in the success of a club. The general theory behind this is, better players demand higher wages and therefore a high wage bill equates to a better squad and in turn better results.
Although that theory doesn’t quite hold true for every single season, it is spot on more often than not in the Premier League.
Without further delay, let’s look at the top 10 highest earners at Manchester United.
The German international joined Manchester United last summer and is the highest paid player at the club. The former Bayern Munich midfielder has a contract till 2018 and is earning in the region of 12.5 million pounds per year.
The Manchester United captain was the highest paid player at the club before the World Cup winner arrived and is on a long term deal at Old Trafford. Rooney’s contract expires on 2019 and he is earning around 12.2 million pounds per year.
David De Gea
The Spaniard seemed set to leave Old Trafford in the summer. However he stayed and signed a new deal. David De Gea is now one of the highest earners at the club and is earning in the region of 10.4 million pounds per year. He has a contract till 2019.
The former Chelsea arrived as a marquee signing under David Moyes and is earning in the region of 8.3 million pounds per year till 2018.
The highly rated Dutch winger joined Manchester United from PSV in the summer and is unsurprisingly one of the high earners at Old Trafford. Depay currently has a contract till 2019 and is earning in the region of 6.25 million pounds per year.
Ashley Young’s presence in this list is a bit surprising. The England winger is a bit part player at Old Trafford and is earning the same as that of Memphis Depay (6.25 million pounds), thanks to his new deal which will keep him at the club till 2018.
Spanish central midfielder Ander Herrera is frustrated with the lack of playing time at Old Trafford but his wage package is certainly far from frustrating. The former Bilbao midfielder earns in the region of 6 million pounds per year till 2018.
Martial joined Manchester United for an astronomical fee of 36 million pounds and his presence on this list is hardly a surprise. The young Frenchman has been a bright spark for United this season and is earning in the region of 5.7 million pounds per year till 2019.
One of the best young talents in world football, Luke Shaw makes quite a lot for a player his age. The former Southampton left back earns 5.7 million pounds per season till 2019.
The Argentine defender has been in and out of the team due to injuries and is the highest earning centre back at Manchester United. The left sided centre back earns 5.7 million pounds per season till 2019.
