According to reports from Get Football News France, who have cited their colleagues at French Media Outlet Canal+, Manchester United are ‘very close’ to signing Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin. The Frenchman who has a £25m price tag has also been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the past few months.

French football journalist Julien Laurens who works for Le Parisien, RTL, BT Sport and ESPN also confirmed the fresh developments through his Twitter Handle.

Earlier Schneiderlin had himself said in an interview, that should he leave the Saints, it will be for a club who can offer him Champions League Football. The midfielder said, “I learned a lot last season. The goal is to stay in England. It is a championship that I like and where I have a lot of fun. If I leave Southampton, it is for a club that plays better than the Europa League. There are ongoing discussions but nothing is done. But of course the Champions League is my goal. If I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League.”

The Daily Mail specifically claims United are in the box seat to sign the player as Louis Van Gaal is in the market to sign a defensive midfielder who can take up the mantle from Michael Carrick. The English International is already 33 and United have very few options on selecting a player who can anchor the midfield, sitting in front of the back four and help dictate possession.

Schneiderlin has been one of Southampton’s stand out players this season but he missed the Saints’ final-day defeat to Manchester City with a knee ligament injury. The player however claimed that he will now enjoy his holidays and start his rehabilitation to recover and have a good next season.

The Red Devils have also been linked with Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin Strootman (last summer) but none of the deals materialized. Thus Schneiderlin seems to be a very good choice thanks to his Premier League experience and dynamism in the middle of the park.
