Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has praised goal keeper David de Gea “unbelievable” as the Spaniard once again impressed in the 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

De Gea made several stunning saves through out the match but his stoppage time save off Papiss Cisse proved to be decisive, as United secured their fourth position in the league.

The Spaniard has just over a year left on his existing deal and has been repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Van Gaal, who hopes to persuade De Gea to sign a new deal, has hailed his keeper as “outstanding”.

“David De Gea, this year, is unbelievable,” said van Gaal, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“In my career I have a lot of good goalkeepers, for example Edwin van der Sar was one of my goalkeepers and (Victor) Valdes also with Barcelona, but De Gea is having a great season.”

Van Gaal also praised his skipper for his unbelievable fighting spirit that led to the opening goal.

Rooney closed down what appeared to be a lost cause that paved way for Ashley Young to hit a late strike.

“I have to say that Wayne, how he makes that goal, is unbelievable, because it was a lost ball. But his fighting spirit is unbelievable,” van Gaal told MUTV.

United are about to enter the crucial phase of their season, where several tough fixtures are awaiting them, but Van Gaal is confident his team is well capable of meeting out any challenges.
