Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes the Red Devils need to sign five world-class players, including the likes of Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels and Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos.

The Old Trafford club have endured a poor run in all competitions as they finished seventh in the league table. Their final position has made them ineligible to feature in either Champions League and Europa League next season.

Without European competition, United will find it difficult to attract top quality players. However, Schmeichel, the former Red Devils goalkeeper has urged United to strengthen the squad with the addition of world-class signings.

“United have got Jones, Smalling and Evans but going by what the media are saying, Hummels is a target,” Schmeichel told the Express Sport.

“That’s a good starting point to bring him in. He has good leadership skills and he is a fantastic defender. He’s someone we’ve been looking at for a couple of years and he’s been heavily connected with United.”

“Also we need to bring in a midfielder – players like Toni Kroos who has been mentioned for a long time and he would be a great addition. We need players that can install or restore the confidence in the club and squad as well,” he said.

“It will send valuable messages to people that care about the club. I think four or five players is what is being reported in the media and that’s not too far enough,” the former United keeper added.

United legends Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand will leave Old Trafford as a free agent this summer. The centre-back duo have called an end to their Red Devils career as the Serbian has already agreed terms in joining Inter Milan next season.

The former England international was hoping to get a contract extension, but was reportedly asked to leave after the final game of the season against Southampton. Schmeichel says United will not struggle in finding replacement for Vidic and Ferdinand.

“One thing that is important, is nobody has ever been shown to be irreplacable at Manchester United. It doesn’t matter who we’ve had, there’s someone who has always stepped in and delivered,” the Great Dane explained.

“I don’t think anyone is irreplacable. I think they, [Vidic and Ferdinand] are one of the best defensive partnerships I have ever seen. They have been tremendous and it’s sad they have come towards the end of their United careers.”

“This football club has the ability to replace players as big as they come. Hummels is a proven world class performer. I have looked at him as a potential United player. He is a proven world class performer. He’s a guy who if they brought in, I would be very happy,” Schmeichel concluded.
