United loan Rossi to Newcastle, new striker coming in?

Techincally, we’re supposed to be buying players…

Newcastle United have agreed terms with Manchester United to take Giuseppe Rossi on loan until 1 January 2007.

Rossi will link up with Newcastle United immediately and if he can stay injury-free will get some invaluable first team experience.

Alex Ferguson quotes:

“It was a big decision for us especially as we don’t have the choice of strikers. But this is something that Giuseppe wanted as he needs regular first team football.

When he returns he will be a more experienced player who will be able to offer us much more.”

As a condition of all loan deals between Premiership clubs, Rossi will not be allowed to play for Newcastle when they visit Old Trafford on 1 October.

But for the rest of his half-season at St James’ Park, he will compete with Obafemi Martins and Shola Amoebi for a place at Newcastle United.

Rossi, who scored four goals in 12 first-team games for Manchester United last season, would then be expected to return to Old Trafford for the second half of the season.

Alan Smith and Guiseppe Rossi

Smith will have more responsibility with Rossi gone and Solskjaer being moved to the right-wing
Either Manchester United are going to sign a top striker today, or we are going to go into September with just Rooney and Saha as our main front-men. I know that Rossi is not ideal for a first-team slot but his presence would have made it much easier for Rooney and Saha to miss most of the league and cup matches and having Smith and Solskjaer as backup doesn't exactly give me much confidence. So are we signing anyone today? Tevez, Trezeguet, Mascherano, Hargreaves, Senna, Haestad, Reo-Coker, Nolan, Defoe? At this rate I'll even take Gallas... Update: Tevez and Mascherano to West Ham? Just about makes my fkn day, but also means that Reo-Coker is moving. Where to?

Another thing worrying me is that Newcastle United has become a striker’s graveyard as far as I’m concerned – Owen is crocked, Ameobi is crocked, hell, new signing Martins got crocked in the first match he played in.

There is every indication that Rossi will be thrown in the far end at Newcastle and will get valuable first-team experience in the next 4 months, but really, why send your young striker to a place that has ‘unlucky’ plastered all over it? Hopefully he’ll stay fit and hopefully he will return to Manchester United with 10 goals to his name and ready to lead the line in 2007.
