Both Liverpool and Manchester United need a top central midfielder in the summer and would battle out for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.

The Portugal midfielder has a £35m buy-out clause but the Mirror claims due to a change in third party ownership rules, the value could drop significantly.

Liverpool are looking to strengthen due to the imminent departure of skipper Steven Gerrard to La Galaxy and may replace him with the Portugal midfielder.

The Reds are also linked with a move for Roma’s Miralem Pjanic but may find difficult to sign him, with the club not too keen to sell the highly rated Bosnian midfielder.

Recently, Manchester United winger Nani said the chances are high for United to sign Carvalho.

“He is a great player,” he told the the Mail. “He has a lot of quality.

“I think at the end of this season he will be prepared to play in the Premier League.

“I think if Manchester United are interested it’s a good chance.”

United have other midfield targets as well, the likes of Radja Nainggolan, Kevin Strrotman and Lars Bender been linked with the club recently.
