Jonny Evans

According to reports from Sky Sports, Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is set to join West Brom after the Baggies have agreed with a fee with the Red Devils for the Northern Ireland international.

The 27 year old had falled down the packing order at Old Trafford under Louis Van Gaal despite United being on the lookout for a centre back who can bring stability to the back four. West Brom had earlier made a move for Tottenham’s Federico Fazio but the player failed to agree a contract to move to The Hawthorns despite long negotiations.

Thus West Brom manager Tony Pulis has made the move for Evans who was earlier also linked with Everton. Though the details of the deal isn’t known, BT Sport reveal that that the Baggies will pay an initial £6m which could rise up to £8m with potential add ons.

Evans has been at United for 11 years, joining the Youth Team as a school boy in 2004 before breaking into the first-team in 2006. However, despite making 197 appearances since his debut in 2007, the centre back failed to make a positive impact under Van Gaal. Evans made only 15 appearances in all competitions last season as Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were preferred as the centre back partnership.

Pulis had earlier claimed that he would be delighted to sign a player of Evan’s experience saying, “Jonny would be a great signing for the football club but it’s down to the money men and his side. It takes three parties, the player and the clubs. I’d love to sign Jonny Evans.”

With Evans now on the verge of join West Brom, the Baggies could sell Joleon Lescott. The former Everton and Manchester City defender could join Aston Villa for an initial fee of £1m with another £1m in add-ons.
