Manchester United have joined the race to sign Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci. The 29-year-old’s name was discussed in negotiations over Paul Pogba.

According to reports from ESPN, United will turn their attention to buying a centre-back once they complete the signing of Pogba.

Jose Mourinho has already signed Eric Bailly from Villarreal but feels the central defence area still needs strengthening.

The former Chelsea manager even tried to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane earlier this summer but the French international had rejected a move to Manchester United.

The competition for Bonucci is fierce as Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City have had set their eyes on the Italy international as well.

Earlier this week, Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that City had offered €60m for Bonucci, with €8m to go to the 29-year-old across a potential five-year contract. Juventus haven’t replied to the offer as yet.

Bonucci, who is currently holidaying in the Mediterranean, is said to have told close friends that he is considering a move away from Juventus and wants to experience the challenge of playing in the Premier League. Chelsea could another possible destination for him where he would be reunited with his former boss Antonio Conte.

Under Conte, Bonucci won three consecutive Serie A titles and went on to establish himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world. The duo linked up again in the recent European Championships in France, with the defender emerging out as one of the stars of the tournament.

If Juventus sell Pogba to United (which is as good as done), it is highly unlikely they would allow Bonucci to leave as well. United also retain an interest in Everton defender John Stones.
