According to reports from the Times, Manchester United are in pole position to sign Southampton midfielder Moragn Schneiderlin. The French midfielder has two years left in his current contract at St’ Mary’s but the Saints are resigned to lose the player.

The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has been linked with a move to greener pastures in the Premier League with all of Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham interested in securing his services. Schneiderlin said to France Bleu Alsace radio station that he expected his future to be resolved shortly. The Guardian have quoted the player saying, “The negotiations are ongoing and should be completed in the coming days, hopefully before the resumption of [Southampton’s pre-season] training next week.”

However any potential suitor should meet Southampton’s £24m evaluation of the midfielder. It will be interesting if Schneiderlin finally signs for Manchester United as manager Louis Van Gaal has already been linked with Bayern Munich talisman Bastian Schweinsteiger.

There is no doubt that the Red Devils are in the market to sign a defensive midfielder who can take up the mantle from Michael Carrick. The English International is already 33 and United have very few options on selecting a player who can anchor the midfield, sitting in front of the back four and help dictate possession.

Schneiderlin no doubt fills in the bill perfectly. Moreover, he had earlier stated about his desire about playing in the Champions League.

Schneiderlin was one of Southampton’s stand out players in the 2014-15 season and Arsenal are also interested in him. Thus should a decision be made next week, it will be interesting to see for which club he puts pen to paper.
