Manchester United picked up another three points against Sunderland at Old Trafford today, thanks to a brace from Wayne Rooney. The 2-0 win sends United above Arsenal to third place in the table as the Red Devils look to return to the Champions League next season.

The visitors started the game well pressing high up the pitch as the likes of Wickham managed to carve out a couple of half chances in the opening 15 minutes. Van Gaal’s side started the game slowly with the likes of Herrera and Blind struggling to assert their control over the midfield.

Angel Di Maria continued his poor start to life at Old Trafford with an abject display before he was replaced by Adnan Januzaj in the second half. United clever use of width through Valencia and Young brought out the only cutting edge in their game.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring from the spot when Falcao was fouled inside the box. Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown was given his marching orders in the second half shortly after John O’shea gave away the penalty.

Manchester United continue to pick up important points despite failing to convince in terms of performances. With a host of big games coming their way in March, Van Gaal’s side has a lot to improve on if they want to maintain their top three position.
