MANCHESTER CITY TEAM NEWS & PREVIEW
Fresh from a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Everton, their second defeat in a space of four games, City face another daunting task ahead when they play host to Spurs on Saturday. Pep Guardiola has already admitted that his side is slipping away from the title challenge, and should they drop further points against another title challenger, it will kill all hopes of a potential comeback into the race. In fact, they will have a real battle on their hands to finish in the top four.
However, a victory will see them sharing same points with Spurs. So, City are in a very delicate situation at the moment, and that is why this game is so important for them. They cannot afford to lose further ground in the title race.
So, what is going wrong at City? First, Guardiola needs to fix his defence. They have conceded 11 goals in their last eight matches, with individual errors at the back hurting City badly. Second, Claudio Bravo is failing to exude confidence at the back. He might be a good player with the ball on his feet, but his glove work has been a huge suspect. And finally, Kevin De Bruyne‘s form is a huge worry. He is a key player for the side, but the Belgian hasn’t scored a league goal since September.
Good news for Guardiola is that Gabriel Jesus has received international clearance, and he is in line to make his debut on Saturday. Fernandinho is suspended for the match, while Vincent Kompany is still out, short of match fitness.
Possible Manchester City starting XI (4-2-3-1): Bravo, Sagna, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Toure, Zabaleta, Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Aguero.
TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS & PREVIEW
Spurs are riding high on momentum, and after picking up 21 points from their last 7 games, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are firmly back in the title race. The north Londoners are second in the league, same points with Liverpool, and are giving the impression that they are going to challenge Chelsea till the very end.
They have been ruthless against teams below them since their 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford in December. The likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli are firing all cylinders, while Christian Eriksen is expertly pulling the strings from behind.
It remains to be seen how Spurs cope up with the loss of Jan Vertonghen, who sustained an ankle injury in the 4-0 win over West Brom and is expected to miss the next six weeks of action. Erik Lamela is still short of match fitness and he is unlikely to be available for Saturday’s trip to Manchester City.
Possible Tottenham starting XI (3-4-2-1): Lloris, Davies, Alderweireld, Dier, Rose, Dembele, Wanyama, Walker, Eriksen, Alli, Kane.
