Liverpool are set to bid for Southampton skipper Adam Lallana, according to Sky Sports.

Adam_Lallana_2726635bLallana, 25, has emerged as a top target for Brendan Rodgers, and is looking to bring the playmaker to Anfield before the start of the World Cup this summer.

Interestingly, James Pearce of Liverpool Echo earlier mentioned that Rodgers is ready to spend big on a goal scoring midfielder.

Responding to a Q&A question about who Rodgers could be looking to bring in, Pearce said:

I’d say a No 10. That was Rodgers’ priority last summer but it didn’t happen as he missed out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Sterling has done brilliantly in that role behind the strikers at times but I still think the manager sees his future out wide.

Coutinho has played there too but he doesn’t score or create enough goals to bank on him as your No 10 throughout a season.”

Lallana was voted the Saints’ Player of the Season, has scored nine goals in 37 premier League games this season. He is certain to go to the World Cup after a brilliant season with the Saints, and was recently included in the PFA team of the season.

However, the St Albans-born midfielder recently admitted he is happy on on the south coast, proving that it will be a real struggle for Liverpool to prise him away from the club.

“The club means the world to me,” said the Saints man,

“I’ve been here since I was 12 and I want to keep progressing with the club.

“I’ve got a great relationship with the fans. We’ve been on a journey, and this is the icing on the cake.”

Southampton meanwhile have insisted that they have received no official bid for the player from Liverpool.

Earlier we reported that Manchester United hold a strong interest in the Saints star and his teammate Luke Shaw. David Moyes was sacked by Manchester United last month and it remains to be seen whether the new manager will be interested in the Saints duo, potentially entering into a bidding war with bitter rivals Liverpool.

What do you think? Would Lallana be a good fit at Anfield?
