Liverpool: Top five potential left back signings

This summer is going to be massive for Liverpool. Simply massive. If the last season was a case for introspection, the coming season will certainly be ‘a season of expectation’ for Liverpool.

In fact, they already have exceeded all expectations this season. No body expected them to be a part of title race at the first place – the sojourn under Brendan Rodgers is simply remarkable.

Now comes the hardest part. Rodgers has outlined the need to bolster the squad in order to fight on both domestic and European fronts. Several areas of the squad needs to be replenished and adding a top left back is one of them. Liverpool won’t be extending the loan period of Aly Cissokho while Rodgers doesn’t see Jon Flanagan as a left-back either.

Liverpool have had been linked with few good left-backs this season, and here we take a look at five of those candidates, who can join the Red brigade at Anfield next summer.

Alberto Moreno (Sevilla)

The 21-year-old Sevilla defender has had a terrific campaign under his belt and it won’t be an exaggeration to say that he is arguably one of the best left-backs in La Liga at the moment. No wonder why Real Madrid are going hell for leather for his signature.

Liverpool Echo broke an Exclusive report yesterday that Liverpool have made Moreno their top priority as well, but the Reds should face a tough fight from Premier League rivals Chelsea, who had already lodged a bid for the Spaniard.

Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea)

Liverpool were interested in signing the Chelsea left-back on loan in the last January transfer window, however, the deal was blocked and the Englishman was sent on loan to Aston Villa instead.

The 24-year-old doesn’t seen to have any future at the Bridge. He was once touted as long term replacement of Ashley Cole, but highly unlikely that will be the case. Liverpool could go for him again this summer.

Guilherme Siqueira (Granada, Benfica)

The 28-year-old Brazilian born with Italian citizenship has played the second half of the season on loan with Benfica, where he has an option of making the move permanent next season.

Siqueira

He is a solid defender with excellent technical abailities and has been a target of Liverpool (as also Real Madrid). The Reds had reportedly made an offer for him last summer and it will be interesting to see, whether they go for him again this summer as well.

Ben Davies (Swansea)

Back in February, English newspaper Daily Mail reported Liverpool’s interest in the Swansea defender, who has caught the eyeballs of several top clubs in Europe including Atletico Madrid.

Ben Davies

The 21-year-old Wales international is thought be one of the promising talents in the league and knowing the good rapport Rodgers has with the Wales club, the possibility of signing him as a back-up option cannot be completely ruled out either. But is he good enough to be the first choice left-back at Liverpool?

Marcos Rojo (Sporting)

He is probably the most versatile of all the full-backs mentioned here. He can play as a centre-back as well and has had a wonderful campaign with Sporting. Liverpool scouts have watched him on many occasions this season but the Reds face a strong fight from Catalan giants Barcelona to land him.
