Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insisted he needs at least four or five top quality players in order to mount challenge on both domestic and European fronts next season. Having finished second (TV revenue) in the league and qualified for Champions League next season, money probably won’t be a huge issue for Liverpool to attract top players in the summer.

According to reports from The Guardian, Liverpool are plotting an audacious move for Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

The 22-year-old made his name during his time with Basel before joining Bayern in 2012 for a reported fee of €11.6m. Despite being a regular for the Swiss national team, he has failed to secure regular place in the star-studded Bayern team.

Liverpool who were interested in signing him in the January transfer window will be making a move for him again in the summer. Bayern have always maintained, however the player is not for sale.

Nobody has called about Shaqiri. Right now there are no plans [to sell],” said Bayern Munich’s Chief Executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge last July.

“The coach is completely satisfied with him. I think we will go into the season with the current squad.”

A lot would depend on whether Bayern would be willing to lower their valuation, which currently stands around the €20m mark, but as I said earlier, money probably is not a factor for Liverpool and with Champions League to offer as well, can see the deal happening.
