Liverpool are looking favourites to land the highly rated centre-back from French champions Paris Saint-Germain, Mamadou Sakho, who is out of contract next year.

Defence was one of the major areas Liverpool needed reinforcement in the summer. There was a need to replenish the void left by club legend Jamie Carragher and although Kolo Toure was signed on a free transfer from Manchester City, manager Brendan Rodgers was still on the look-out for one or two quality additions.

However, with injuries to Toure and Sebastian Coates, Rodgers is left with no other options than to delve in the transfer market immediately. Sakho was one of Liverpool’s prime targets this season, while Rodgers himself confirmed few days back that the Reds are interested in the France international.

The 23-year-old is also looking for a move this summer while several Serie A clubs like AC Milan, Roma and Napoli have registered interest in signing him.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who compared Sakho’s importance to the French club with Steven Gerrard’s to Liverpool, claimed that the Parisian club does not want to part ways with him.

“Sakho is a child of the club – just like Steven Gerrard is at Liverpool,” he told L’Equipe.

“It is hard to imagine him wearing another team’s jersey. I’m a little surprised that he wants to leave. I had a discussion with him. My position is very clear and he knows it – we want to keep him and we will do everything to achieve that.”

But it seems like Sakho could still make a move and will be available for around £12 million and according to reputed Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the defender could make a move to Liverpool in the next few days.

He tweeted: #Sakho future: @OfficialASRoma talked to him but he could (and should) sign with @LFC soon. #footballtransfers

Meanwhile, Liverpool are also interested in signing the highly rated young centre-half, Tiago Ilori from Sporting and according to Portuguese media outlets, the Reds have already agreed a €7 million deal plus add-ons for him.
