Liverpool keen to sign 23-year-old highly rated Spanish defender

Íñigo-Martínez

Liverpool are interested in signing Real Sociedad’s highly rated centre-back Inigo Martinez in the summer.

Scouts were present at the Camp Nou on Saturday, where Barcelona defeated Sociedad 2-0 to move one step closer to winning the La Liga title.

Although, it was not a perfect and eye-catching performance from the 23-year-old, but Catalan newspaper Sport says Liverpool scouts were pretty impressed with his overall quality.

Martinez was lucky not to give away a penalty and looked vulnerable at times against the pace and guile of Lionel Messi on Saturday.

He has made 32 league appearances this season and has scored three goals. He has a bright future ahead of him and would improve the Liverpool defence immensely.

Liverpool need couple of good centre-backs in the summer. Dejan Lovren has been a huge disappointment while Kolo Toure is lacking in sharpness with age now catching up. Furthermore, not many supremely talented young defenders are coming out from the Liverpool academy at the moment which could force Brendan Rodgers to sign a new centre-back in the summer.

Martinez is far from the finished product, and he needs to improve on several aspects of his game, but at the same time, he is young, and has a great future ahead of him.
