The Reds manager is looking to bolster the squad in January with a need to reinforce the defensive midfield region is a top priority, especially now that Lucas Leiva is injured.

According to reports from The Sunday Times, Liverpool are showing great interest in Benfica midfielder Andre Gomes and Rodgers may look to sign him before the transfer deadline day.

The Portugal under 21-international is known for his excellent technical abilities and will be well suited to Liverpool’s possession oriented game.

Benfica are demanding £12.4m for the 20-year-old, whose opportunities at Benfica were limited by the rise of Nemanja Matic, who has joined Chelsea in the winter transfer window.

Liverpool were also interested in Yann M’Villa but the Reds have yet to make any formal offer for the French midfielder.
