Leicester City hope to fend off interest in Jamie Vardy by offering the striker a lucrative contract to increase his £30,000-per-week wages.

Vardy rose to prominence this season after becoming the first player in the Premier League era to have scored in 11 consecutive league games. The 28-year-old striker has scored 15 goals this season to lead his club to the top of the table this season.

Chelsea are reportedly showing an interest in signing the English striker, who has two-and-a-half years left on his current deal. According to several media reports, the Blues are weighing up a £30m move in January to secure the player’s signature.

Despite him being in great form this season, critics have wondered whether Vardy is really worth his £30m valuation.

Arsene Wenger, who has previously likened Vardy’s acceleration with Alexis Sanchez, believes the striker is currently the best goalscorer in the league and rightfully justifies the price tag being quoted for him.

“Yes, because he is the best goalscorer in the league and you have many players under him who have been paid much more, who don’t score that number of goals,” said Wenger as quoted by The Times.

“The mystery is without a doubt, ‘Why is he 28 and nobody bought him before?’ And why did he not have that success before? But today, of course, nobody would dispute that,” he added.

Vardy was taken off in the second half against Everton last week with a hamstring problem, but he is fit enough to play against Liverpool on Boxing Day at Anfield.
