Juventus coach Didier Deschamps is adamant that “no one is going anywhere” and that even in Serie B Juve’s star-studded cast (albeit shorn of its defenders) is set to stay.
Juventus chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has a different grasp on matters, saying that:
“If there are some departures there will also be some arrivals and whoever leaves will certainly not be sold cheaply.”
It’s worth noting that this statement was made right after the original match-fixing verdict, while Deschamps’ interview is recent.
Will Juve sell more players? With people like Vieira, they may not have a choice. Vieira’s desire to leave Arsenal – first for Madrid and then finally for Juventus – was the product of a hunger to win the Champions League. If he stays at Arsenal, he won’t be winning it anytime soon. The same goes for players such as Buffon, Camoranesi, Trezeguet and Ibrahimovic.
The question is, who will go next, and where will they go?
Vieira – Inter Milan or Manchester United. Inter are league champions (retrospectively) and are in pole position to win the next season as well. They need a strong midfielder and a 20-goal striker, and have the money to match United in this transfer battle.
Buffon – Milan / Arsenal / Barcelona. Rumours of an exchange with Milan (with Abbiati going the other way) came up earlier this month, and so did rumours regarding Arsenal, but if anyone can buy Buffon from Juventus it has to be Barcelona as they improve their squad in a bid to win the league and europe double again.
The Rest – Everyone. I could sit here and give you “rumours” on who’s going where, but seriously, right now it seems like there is a glut in the transfer market with a host of players suddenly available and no one willing to buy them. Newcastle and Liverpool are definitely looking at the Juve strikers, while another Italian club could pick up Camoranesi.
Other than that, your guess is as good as mine.
