Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal claimed on his first press conference that he would take a closer look on the players he has at disposal before delving into the transfer market. In case, he needs to do so, which is highly likely, he won’t have to worry about the finances, after has been told he is free to break the world transfer record to bring right kind of players to Manchester United.

Many had thought that having finished outside top four last season under David Moyes, Manchester United would fail to attract top players, while the club might suffer financially due to their lack of participation in the Champions League. But, the 20-times-Champions stunned everyone after agreeing a record £750m kit deal with Adidas – strong statement that only suggest United are still one of the world’s biggest clubs.

Arturo Vidal

Despite the fact that the coming season will still be considered as a rebuilding phase, Manchester United cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes they did under Moyes. How Van Gaal performs during the season, is a matter of conjecture, but United cannot simply afford to waste this summer or for that matter any transfer windows from here on.

Already the club have signed Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera but further incursions in the transfer market are needed to bolster the squad. So, in order to break the transfer records, you need to add ‘world class’ players to your ranks. Here we take a look at five such players, who Manchester United can try to bring at Old Trafford this summer.

Arturo Vidal

Is there any Manchester United fan in this world out here who doesn’t want the Chilean to join at Old Trafford? He is one of the best midfielders in the world and would be a massive, massive signing for United. And if the reports are to be believed Juventus might sell him as well, should they receive anything around €50m. Fingers crossed.

Mats Hummels

Catalan newspaper Sport have made a fool of themselves when they claimed United could sign arguably one of the best defenders in the world for only €20m, but there goes an underlying feeling that Dortmund might sell him should United come up with a really tempting offer. The Old Trafford club need one quality central defender, after the departures of Rio and Vidic, so why not target the best of the lot around.

Angel di Maria

Angel di Maria

Real Madrid are certain to sell the Argentine winger after they have signed James Rodriguez from Monaco yesterday. Di Maria is a reported target of both PSG & United, but the French club are completing on spending €60m for him, as they are already under the threat of FFP. In such a scenario, without any genuine competitor, United can gain an upper hand in the bargaining table with Madrid.

Juan Cuadrado

The Colombian has had a terrific world cup in Brazil and now finds himself in a transfer tug of war between United and Barcelona. A superb wing-back who is seen as a perfect replacement of Dani Alves. At the same time, he can be the next big star at Old Trafford under Van Gaal.

Edinson Cavani

Cavani for reasons unknown continuously gets linked with Manchester United. French media constantly feeds us the notion that the Uruguayan is unhappy at PSG. In the past few months, reports emerged that he could be used in the part-exchange deal for Eden Hazard, while the French nouveau riche would welcome a swap deal for Wayne Rooney as well. Utter nonsense. Of all the possible big name players linked with the club, the probability of Cavani joining United is as close as Alastair Cook’s chances of notching two triple hundreds for the rest of series against India.
