Manchester United moved to just one point behind league leaders Manchester City (who face Aston Villa on Sunday) following their 2-0 victory over West Brom in the Premier League. Goals from Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata gave United their first domestic win since mid-October.

Chelsea suffered their third consecutive Premier League defeats after losing out 1-0 to Stoke City. A second half strike from Marko Arnautovic made the difference in the end, putting further pressure on manager Jose Mourinho.

Elsewhere, Newcastle move out of the relegation zone, thanks to a goal from Ayoze Perez and a heroic performance from the Magpies goalkeeper, Rob Elliot. Swansea suffered their fifth league defeat in last eight games, after being beaten 1-0 by Norwich City.

Southampton climbed to seventh in the league, after earning a 1-0 victory over Sunderland – the goal coming from Dusan Tadic, who scored from the spot. West Ham moved to fifth in the table, despite managing a 1-1 draw against Everton.

Three Major Talking Points From Saturday’s Fixtures

United’s young brigade exciting to watch – Louis van Gaal dropped Memphis Depay and gave Jesse Lingard his first league debut on Saturday. And he didn’t disappoint.

After a stalemate first half, a moment of brilliance from Lingard gave United the lead. He became the first United player to score a Premier League goal from outside the box in 2015, per Squawka

Likewise, Anthony Martial was equally impressive. The Frenchman was a constant threat upfront and created one or two chances on his own in the first half. His menacing pace got the better off Gareth MacAuely, who brought him down in the box and earning a red card in the process. Juan Mata cooly slotted home from the resulting penalty ensuring United seal their first league win since September.

Better performance from Chelsea, not the result – Another game. Another embarrassing defeat. It’s getting bad to worse for Chelsea. The Blues have now lost 7 of their first 12 league games!

To be fair, it was one of Chelsea’s best performances of the season. Chelsea created many good chances, and saw several appeals for penalty turned down.

Jamie Vardy can’t stop scoring – The 28-year-old striker created a new record on Saturday after he scored from the spot against Watford. Vardy became the first English player to have scored in nine consecutive Premier League games.

With 12 goals to his name already, he is the leading scorer in the Premier League and the most in-form striker in the country. Can he break Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s 12-year record? Fingers crossed.
