Why Chelsea shouldn’t sign Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira

According to Spanish reports, Chelsea are back in for Real Madrid’s central midfielder Sami Khedira, with Jose Mourinho said to be interested in taking his former charge to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo have carried the story, which also says that Mourinho was close to signing the German in the summer, only for a knee injury to scupper the deal.

Chelsea have just shelled out over £21m for Nemanja Matic, with the Serbian giant making an immediate impact at the club with powerful displays against Manchester City and Newcastle.

His signing leaves no room for a player like Khedira, who is also predominantly a defensive minded operator.

With Mikel, Ramires and Matic, the Blues are well stocked on the defensive side of things, but with only an aging Frank Lampard and the emerging Marco van Ginkel as more attacking options, Mourinho should focus on bringing in a young, dynamic player, able to push forward in support of the likes of Eden Hazard and Oscar.

Chelsea are still quite far from the days of when Lampard and Essien were in their prime, supported by the likes of Michael Ballack and Claude Makelele, but for me, Sami Khedira would not be a step in the right direction.

A player similar to Juventus’ Arturo Vidal or Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan would be ideal. A box to box monster, strong and technically sound; Matic and Ramires could ably support such a midfielder.

There have been persistent calls to move David Luiz up into midfield permanently, and I am a strong advocate of this. But Luiz alone would not be enough for a 60+ game season.

What do you think? Which midfielder would suit Chelsea? Let me know in the comments below…
