Well, it’s not all over for Chelsea left back Ashley Cole. Jose Mourinho has insisted that he will speak with Cole regarding his contract situation, though Times journalist Oliver Kay feels that a new contract for the 33-year-old is highly unlikely.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has already announced his departure, following the expiry of his contract. While Jose Mourinho spoke with Lampard personally before parting ways, same didn’t happen with Cole.

“I didn’t have a chance, I didn’t have a chance.  With Lampard I spoke a couple of weeks before the end of the league, with Ashley I didn’t have that chance and it was a different situation, I want to see what is going on, what is going to happen but I will speak with him, yes” he said in an interview with Yahoo.

Cole struggled to get into first team under Mourinho last season, partly due to injury but mostly because of the good form shown by Cesar Azpilicueta. As a consequence, he is not selected in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

Mourinho added: “I don’t have regrets because I don’t work for the national team, I work for Chelsea and my decisions in Chelsea, some right, some wrong, that is part of the job but my decisions are decisions I make, I always make thinking about the club, the team and the players come after. “

“I always say that, before the team, before the club, we after.  At a certain moment I felt that when he had the injury in the ribs and he was out for a couple of months, Azpilicueta start playing and he starts playing so well that I think we gave him no chance in the last part of the season.”

“He showed clearly how good he is because he had to play a Champions League semi-final after being without playing for a long, long time and he played with great stability to the team, he showed clearly how good he was, how experienced he was and after that I felt I keep him in the team and I push him to get a World Cup position in the team and he played really well, he played big matches, he played Real Madrid twice, he played Liverpool, he played Swansea, Norwich, he played six or seven matches consecutively and Mr Hodgson could easily see that he was in perfect condition.”

“After that comes the option and the option I respect and he can choose who he wants and he choose Baines and Shaw and it is his decision and not even a single critic to that but Ashley was in condition to be picked.”

Chelsea are close to signing Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis, which will put further pressure on Cole’s future at the London club. The Brazilian left-back has agreed a personal deal with the Blues and the deal is expected to go through within next few weeks.
