Chelsea: Jose Mourinho has massive midfield options

If all of the transfer gossip is to be believed – and I know it isn’t – you have to wonder quite what Jose Mourinho has in mind for Chelsea next season. In fact, if only half of it is about right, it means there could be something of an overload in the Blues’ midfield next term.

If you count both the holding and attacking midfield players of comprising perhaps five places in the Blues set up, the pressure to get a game next season must already be massive. Some will of course say, but just as a number haven’t joined, no-one mentioned here, has actually left yet either.  On the rosta already, there’s Nemnja Matic, Ramires, John Obi Mikel, Marco van Ginkel, Mohamed Salah, Eden Hazard, Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schurrle and Willian. Then, add in the young German Mario Pasalic and, returning from a season on loan at Liverpool, Victor Moses.  That’s already enough players to fill an entire team, let alone the midfield slots. We must then of course add in the newly acquired Cesc Fabregas, arriving back in London from Barcelona. All of this of course is without looking at other players who may be returning from loan such as Josh Mceachran.

With such an abundance of players already available, Chelsea fans must be a little mystified why the club are continued to be linked with bringing additional talent for this position. Players like Paul Pogba of Juventus and Sammy Khedira are being linked, as is Manchester United William Carvalho. There’s even talk of Thiago returning to the club from Atletico Madrid, probably just to cover in case there are ten injuries one suspects.

With the striking inadequacies of last season costing the Blues any real chance of a successful tilt at the title, it is of course possible that Mourinho may tinker further with his ‘no striker’ formation, such as deployed at old Trafford in the early part of last season. Not quite a ‘false number nine’ ploy, in fact more of a ‘no number nine’ in fairness. With Diego Costa’s seemingly imminent arrival however, there’s probably not much mileage in that.

In reality, it looks likely that there will be a number of exits from the club with, of those mentioned above, Mikel and Moses the most likely candidates to be moving on. Mourinho is known for having structured plans, but seeing how his midfield shapes up next season will be massively interesting.
