This season’s transfer deadline day is a very important day for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal. Having lost Olivier Giroud until the New Year through injury, it is absolutely imperative for the Gunners to bring in reinforcements up front to have a real chance of challenging for silverware.

But, in reports coming in today from O Jogo in Portugal (look away, Gooners), Arsenal may be set to lose another striker. Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell has reportedly demanded a move away from the Emirates, after being left on the sidelines for most of the first 3 Premier League games. Portuguese giants Benfica are interested in signing the 22 year-old, and are willing to pay €10 million.

Campbell, who spent last season on loan at Greek side Olympiakos, was a star for his country in the World Cup as Costa Rica surprised everyone and made it to the quarter-finals. A lot was expected from the talented youngster in this campaign, but Wenger has hardly given him any playing-time so far.

The French manager though, has insisted that Campbell is a part of his plans and will not leave the Emirates, despite interest from several clubs.

‘We’ve had lots of enquiries and turned them down. There have been plenty of clubs interested, but I don’t know how many,’ Wenger said.

‘Once I say to my assistant he won’t go out on loan, even if people ask about him, my assistant doesn’t even tell me. When I say no it’s no.

‘He’s definitely a target and a player who is wanted by many clubs.’
