Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester United
English Carling Cup Final
28 February 2010
Wayne Rooney wasn’t expected to play most of the match but ended up netting the game winner to give Manchester United the Carling Cup trophy.
Villa started out strong in the match and would take the lead in the 5th minute as James Milner converted a penalty kick. The penalty was earned by Agbonlahor who was taken down in the box. Manchester United would come back in the 12th minute as Michael Owen scored.
The match continued into halftime at 1-1 and Rooney would come substitute to replace Michael Owen. Owen left with what looked like a hamstring injury.
In the second half, United started to dominate play with virtually all the good scoring chances. Villa was able to hold them off the scoreline until the 74th minute when Rooney headed it past goalkeeper Brad Friedel. The goal proved to be the match winner and Manchester United repeated as Carling Cup champions.
It was a good start for Villa but they couldn’t keep up with Man United in the second half.
