Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur
English Premier League
Emirates
Saturday, 31 October 2009
Kick-off: 1245 GMT

With both sides residing in the top-four for much of the early season, one of the country’s oldest and fiercest derbies takes on added significance as Tottenham make the short trip down the Seven Sisters Road to face familiar foes Arsenal. The fixture coincides with Halloween and, if some of the recent fixtures are anything to go by, viewers will be in for a treat.

Spurs certainly haven’t played too many tricks on their neighbours in recent years. Spurs have never won at the Emirates in any competition and, should they fail to defeat Arsène Wenger’s side on Saturday 31st October, they will complete a whole decade without a league victory over their arch-rivals.

Arsenal Preview

Few fans have forgotten the nine-goal thriller at White Hart Lane in November 2004 either – even though those betting on the game might try to. With Manuel Almunia reported to start on the bench, Cesc Fabregas was the only Arsenal man who took part in that tie still at the club. The club captain played the full part that day and he will be expected be on the pitch for most of this one. He’s been among the goals early on this season – he scored four in his first seven domestic appearances, as well as another from the four European ties he’s featured in.

Tottenham Preview

Tottenham are in the middle of one of their best starts to a league season and are level on points with Arsenal with 19 points from 10 games (Arsenal have a game in hand).

Tottenham have played some thrilling games over the years against Arsenal, not least of which was the 4-4 draw last season, a game that will give Spurs fans hope that they can get something out of this fixture, being an arguably stronger side than last time around.

Spurs fans will also remember the 5-4 game at WHL back in 2004. Jermain Defoe was on target that day in his first spell at the club, but his current three-game ban doesn’t expire until after this game. Ledley King and Robbie Keane were also on the field five years ago, and the two men can reasonably expect to line-up for the latest installment of this titanic contest.

Ledley King, the Spurs number 26, was among the scorers then, just as he was again recently against Portsmouth. Now skipper for club and country, Keane wasn’t among the nine different scorers that day, but if he can produce anything like the form he showed in a four-goal display at home to Burnley last month then Spurs fans will be delighted.

Arsenal v Tottenham Prediction

Tottenham have only won two of their last five matches while Arsenal have won four of their last five. Both teams dropped points last weekend.

Regardless of what Robbie Keane says, Arsenal are simply a better team than Tottenham and while Spurs have shown a tendency to raise their game to go toe to toe with the Big Four sides, they haven’t shown any consistency in beating them.

And that’s why we think Arsenal will win a goal-filled game.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Tottenham
