Arsene Wenger will have to take some big steps in January to shore up a midfield which is facing some big injury worries at the moment. With Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta ruled for three months and six weeks respectively, Arsenal only have Mathieu Flamini fit in the defensive midfield position at the moment.

According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners are looking to bring in Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko in January to sort out the problem. The Frenchman is a real powerhouse in the middle of the park and could be the right answer to Arsenal’s problems. Along with providing solidarity, he is also a handful going forward, and has proved himself capable of scoring some spectacular goals. The club will have to pay an amount around the region of £15 million to land the 25 year-old.

Newcastle though, are trying their best to keep Sissoko at St. James’ Park. Even though he has four years left on his contract, the club are reportedly trying to tie him down by offering better terms. His form has been instrumental in the recent resurgence of Alan Pardew’s side, which has seen the Magpies rise from the relegation zone to the top-half of the table.

Arsenal are also said to be eyeing Everton midfielder James McCarthur, as they look to add security to their backline from midfield. Their vulnerability at the back is something which has been criticised on more than one occasion this season.
