Arsenal are targeting Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, according to the Independent.

The Danish international was out of favour last season due to injury and poor form with Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho being the preferred centre back partnership.

Liverpool have now spent £20 million on bringing in former Southampton man Dejan Lovren. He is expected to be the first choice centre back alongside Sakho this season meaning Agger might be forced out the exit door.

On Tuesday, Barcelona made a £10 million bid for Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, while Manchester United are also interested in the player. Arsene Wenger has said that it is a possibility that Vermaelen will leave this summer. If the bid is accepted, it is likely Arsenal will target another centre back and Agger would be an option.

However, they may need to hold off competition from Denmark side Brondby, who are interested in bringing the defender back to his homeland.

Brondby’s chairman, Jan Bech Andersen said earlier this month: “We will work really, really hard to secure Daniel but, as he has said himself, the timing has to be right.”
