Martinez is a versatile midfielder, who can play as a defensive midfielder or in the central defence. Bayern have an avalanche of midfielders at their disposal, while Martinez has made only 13 league starts this season.

German newspaper Bild understands from a conversation with his counselor Margarita Garay, where he said to have complained: “I have not imagined it”, and furthermore looking to leave the club in summer.

Martinez is the most expensive signing for Bayern but he has not been properly used by Guardiola. The Spaniard has been frequently used in central defence, a position he can play but doesn’t prefer, especially when a season ago, he was getting regular starts in central midfielder under Heynckes.

Bild says Martinez has a contract till 2017 and will be available for £35m. With Manchester City hit by FFP punishments, should Arsenal make a move for him in the summer?
