Arsenal are close to signing AS Monaco star midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia this summer.

The Gunners are looking to bring in a defensive midfielder as they look to strengthen their defence as they look to challenge Chelsea and compete with Manchester United and Manchester City for the league title.

They have Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta as the first choice players in that position. The two players are above the age of 30 and have failed to create an impact against top teams.

According to Gianluca di Marzio, the North London club’s manager Arsene Wenger is a long term admirer of Kondogbia and wants to bring him to the Emirates as Arsenal look to strengthen their squad.

The 22-year-old has showcased his abilities both in the Ligue 1 and in the European competition. He went on to score against Arsenal, which helped his side knock the London club out of the last season’s Champions League in last 16.

Wenger has already held talks with Kondogbia and Arsenal are now favourites to sign Monaco midfielder in the summer transfer window. The player’s performance has also attracted interest from European giants.

The same report also claims Italian giants AC Milan and Inter Milan are also in the race to sign the France international. Milan are ready to pay €20 million to Monaco, while Inter are hoping to set up a meeting with the player and his representatives.

However, Milan and Inter are looking to end their interest as they believe they cannot challenge Arsenal in the race to sign Kondogbia. Both the Serie A sides are now looking for alternatives.

The situation has now left Arsenal in pole position to bring Kondogbia to England in the summer transfer window.
