Germany World Cup winner Philipp Lahm has warned Bayern Munich against signing Angel Di Maria, while also urging his teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger to snub a chance to join Manchester United.
Earlier reports suggested the Bundesliga winner and the Premier League giants were planning a swap deal, which could see the winger and the midfielder move in the opposite direction. Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has put the speculations regarding the swap deal to bed.
However, Bild reports Schweinsteiger is believed to be on his way to United as Bayern legend is set to reunite with his former manager Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford. His compatriot Lahm has admitted that he will be disappointed to see him leave in the summer transfer window.
“Of course I would regret him leaving. I took my decision to stop playing for the national team. Basti and I aren’t the youngest guys around anymore. It’s us who make decisions and everyone should accept them,” Lahm told Goal.
“There’s no reason for me to start a conversation with Bastian. We’ve played in the same team since we were 16 apart from my two years at Stuttgart.
“We’ve gone through a lot together. For me, he’s an exceptional player. The decision about his future should be taken by him and the club. No other player should be involved.”
When asked about if he will be looking forward to see Di Maria at Bayern, the versatile player said, as quoted by FourFourTwo, “”I don’t know if he is a candidate. I don’t know where he will go to or if he will stay.”
“He costs a huge amount of money. There are so many factors like salary and whatever. There are many other people in our club who know more about that topic than me.”
Di Maria joined United from Real Madrid for a British record transfer fee of £59.7m last summer. The Argentine international struggled in his debut season, which has seen him being linked with a move away from United.
