Scolari set to stay as Selecao boss
The incoming President of the Brazilian Football Confederation believes beleaguered boss Luis Felipe Scolari should remain as manager despite his Brazil side’s semi-final obliteration at the hands of Germany.
The Selecao were overrun by Joachim Low’s Germans, with some believing the South Americans were fortunate to have come away with just the final 7-1 scoreline, such was the German dominance in Belo Horizonte.
It has been generally thought that Scolari would resign upon the back of the defeat – the worst in the country’s history in the competition and their first loss on home soil since 1975 -with Brazilian football reeling from arguably one of the most shocking World Cup results of all time.

But Marco Polo Del Nero, president-elect of the Brazilian Football Confederation, wants the 65-year-old to remain at the helm,
“To me, he stays,” Marco Polo Del Nero, told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper (relayed by the Mail). “What happened was a tactical error. That was the problem. But we all make mistakes. It can happen to anyone.
“The important thing is that he did a good job. The campaign and the preparations were good. A base exists.”
Brazil will face the Netherlands this evening in Brasília in the World Cup third-place play-off.

Germany face the same scenario that they did against Italy in 2006 – a defensively strong opponent capable of a devastating counter-attack. Argentina are defensively disciplined, play narrow and will be able to deny Germany’s midfield the space they used so spectacularly against Brazil in the semifinal.
With Schweinsteiger marking Messi, Argentina’s midfield only have to starve Kroos of possession and pin back Khedira to turn this game into a battle of attrition. Fitness issues apart, there’s a good chance this Argentina team will be able to last the distance and maintain the intensity needed to hold off and counter attack.
With that in mind, expect a low scoring game with a potential 0-0 half-time score.
However, as the game goes on, it’s anybody guess. Germany could rack up 2-3 in quick succession, or get beaten on the counter and lose 1-0. At this level, I don’t think Sabella or Low will make the mistake Scolari made, and as a result it’ll come down to concentration, intensity and execution. There are fine margins but I think both teams will score, and it could go into extra-time, but even that should increase Germany’s chances of a win.
