Tottenham Hotspur have continued their spending spree with the purchase of centre-back Vlad Chiriches, the club has announced officially.
Spurs were a bit thin on their defensive front after the deaprtures of William Gallas and Steven Caulker, but have swiftly moved to resolve the problem, after signing the 23-year-old Chiriches for a fee of around £8.5million.
The Romanian has played 62 times for Steaua Bucharest during his two-year stint at the club and has made 19 appearances for his nation as well.
Andre Villas-Boas has spoken fondly of his new signing last night, after Spurs’ enthralling and convincing 3-0 victory over Dinamo Tbilisi in the Europa League.
“He is an interesting player that has been followed by lots of teams,” Villas-Boas said.
“He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball and that’s what we like in our defenders. He is a great leader.”
Having completed all the formalities, Spurs have confirmed his signing on their website as well as announcing it on Twitter with a photo of the centre-back holding the Tottenham jersey.

He becomes the fifth signing of the club, following the arrivals of Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue and Roberto Soldado this summer.
Although the White Hart Lane club are poised to lose their talisman winger Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record transfer fee, they’ve moved quickly to replenish his void by adding Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen, both the players had medicals yesterday and could complete their respective transfers today.
