Premier League champions Manchester United are thought to be putting together a club record-shattering bid for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, after the Red Devil’s second bid of £30 million was rebuffed by the Catalan giants.

Having failed to land Barcelona prodigy Thiago Alcantara in the summer and subsequently missing out on Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United have earmarked Fabregas as their prime target in a bid to beef up their midfield and are preparing to lodge a bid in the region of £35 million, surpassing the club’s previous record of £30.75 million paid to Tottenham for the signature of Dimitar Berbatov.

It is understood that Barcelona have privately declined the offer, stating that the player is not for sale. However, manager David Moyes is keen to land a central midfielder in the summer and said the club are trying their level best to make the deal possible.

The Scot insisted that there might be a point where their pursuit of Fabregas can become a wild-goose chase but the club is not prepared to give up on their target yet. Moyes also admitted that he has his hopes pinned on Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-president, who is handling the transfer, to make the deal happen.

The 26-year-old was largely neglected by Tito Vilanova and a lot will depend on whether the new manager of Barcelona, Gerardo Martino, wants the Spaniard to further his career at Nou Camp and become an integral part of his plans.
