After the De Gea transfer fiasco, the last thing Florentino Perez would want is to help Manchester United.
However, after reports emerged that Rafa Benitez is plotting a move for John Stones, it seems that both clubs could indeed benefit each other this time.
Everton defender, John Stones has been a prime target for Chelsea, who had three bids rejected for the England defender this summer. It seems Stones could ply his trade at Bernabeu next season, if Varane decides to move.
Manchester United have been long term admirers of the French centre back, who is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world right now.
If Manchester United can agree a price with Real Madrid, the Spanish giants are willing to replace Varane with Stones next summer.
Although Stones is an extremely talented young man, Varane is clearly a superior player. In such a scenario, it is unlikely that Real Madrid will sell him and replace him with an inferior player.
However, Van Gaal is keen to sign a centre back and the uncertainty surrounding Varane’s future could well force him to make a move. And if the player shows interest, anything is possible.
Manchester United have the resources to pull it off, but a lot of things will have to fall in place in order for the transfer to happen.
It remains to be seen if there is substance to these rumours, or just wishful thinking.
