It’s the weekend again, and while we sit back and take in the second round of Premier League action (or follow whatever league it is that’s your favorite), there’s still plenty to talk about on the transfer front as we move closer to the end of the transfer window.
Real Madrid have finally relented on their stance on Robinho, clearing the way for his move to Chelsea by announcing that they won’t stand in the way of the Brazilian star moving if that’s what he wants to do.
Rumor Rating: 5 – How nice of them, right?
Meanwhile, Chelsea are all too desperate to be rid of Andriy Shevchenko. Well, that is, on their own terms. After not coming to terms on a deal with AC Milan, Chelsea have reportedly offered Sheva to Roma, of course with the stipulation that they buy him permanently and take on a huge wage bill.
Rumor Rating: 2 – Roma do want to add one more attacker, but it’s more likely to be Monaco’s Jeremy Menez than Shevchenko.
Manchester City have completed the signing of Hamburg SV defender Vincent Kompany. The 22-year old Belgian star has been linked with a move to England since his days at Anderlecht, and he’s finally got it.
Rumor Rating: 5 – It feels like this guy has been around forever, just like Robbie Keane, but it’s only because he’s been a known name for a good few years, and the move to England will only help that.
West Brom have tied up the signing of Mallorca midfielder Borja Valero for a club-record £4.7m. The 23-year old Valero has inked a four-year deal with the Baggies.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Valero may not be rushed into action, which might be for the best, especially considering the investment that’s been made in him. But, if he can pick up where he left off last season with Mallorca, he could make a big impact for Tony Mowbray before long.
Liverpool have rejected Stoke’s £2.5m bid for defender Sami Hyypia.
Rumor Rating: 2 – A higher offer may well persuade Liverpool to think otherwise, but it looks like they’re intent on keeping him. He may be 34, but he’s still a pretty prominent part of their plans for the season.
Juventus are being linked with a move for Michael Ballack. The Chelsea midfielder’s contract expires next summer, and with only a few months to go until he can sign a pre-contract with a new club, there’s been no news on a contract extension.
Rumor Rating: 3 – They are reportedly prepared to offer him a salary of €4.5m per year, which might seem like a big investment for a guy who’s turning 32 soon, and will be 33 shortly after the start of next season, but provided he keeps playing at a high level, he’ll command a pretty high salary.
AC Milan have reportedly made an offer to loan Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos with an option for a permanent €7.8m deal. Newcastle are also interested in Senderos.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Senderos has been linked with an exit for much of the summer, and the Rossoneri are in great need of defensive reinforcements before the window closes. They may not need him to become a regular starter, but he should at least provide some solid cover at the back.
Lyon have signed promising French left back Thimothee Kolodziecziak on loan from Lens. The 17-year old France U-17 international was also a target of Manchester United, but chose to remain in France instead of making the move to England.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Kolodziecziak immediately slots in as the backup to Fabio Grosso, so he should get opportunities to impress very soon.
Shaun Maloney has left Aston Villa, making a return to Celtic for £2.5m.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The price of great regret? Celtic paying £1.5m more for him than what they sold him for last year.
Maurice Edu has been granted a work permit, which ties up the final, and most important, loose end of his £2.6m transfer to Rangers.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Does this mark the end of Rangers’ summer spending? Walter Smith may look to bring in another defender. Then again, like I mentioned before, he may well be looking at Edu to play a defensive role.
