Just when you thought you’d seen it all, today’s transfer roundup will show you that you haven’t.
According to multiple reports, Chelsea may be set to make a €150m offer to AC Milan for Kaka. No, that’s not a typo. They’ve already reportedly made a €100m offer that Milan paid no mind to, but maybe they think another €50m could make the Rossoneri think a little.
Rumor Rating: 2 – Still unlikely to happen, but given that €150m could help them buy all of the future Kakas and Patos from South America that they want to, you never know.
Tottenham are reportedly in talks with Zenit St. Petersburg over Andrei Arshavin, but Zenit’s asking price is not something that Spurs are willing to meet, at least not yet. Zenit’s asking price is £21.5m, but Tottenham have reportedly offered £15.9m.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Inevitably, Zenit are going to have to drop their asking price if Arshavin is going to be sold this summer. Unless he plays through the roof over the next year and Zenit make a run deep in the Champions League, his value can only go down from here, so….
Spurs could be favorites to land VfB Stuttgart defender Fernando Meira, who, as I said in yesterday’s transfer roundup, is set to leave the club.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Tottenham could use some more quality defensive additions, and the 30-year old Meira, who has 52 caps for Portugal and has been at Stuttgart since January 2002, would bring a wealth of experience and talent to Spurs’ backline.
Aston Villa are interested in Real Sociedad keeper Asier Riesgo. The 24-year old could be sold by the club, who are currently playing in Spain’s second division after being relegated following the 2006/07 season.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Villa could be set to land American duo Brad Guzan and Brad Friedel soon, but Riesgo would be a good backup plan if one of those doesn’t work out.
Hull are closing in on a deal for Wigan striker Marlon King after having a bid accepted by the Latics, and they’ve also made an offer for Borussia Dortmund defender Delron Buckley after the South African international spent two weeks on trial with the Tigers.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Buckley, who has 60 caps for South Africa, would be the second defensive addition for Hull, following Bernard Mendy into the squad, while King would be their second forward signing after bringing in Craig Fagan earlier in the summer.
On Wednesday, we’ll find out whether Samuel Eto’o will join Uzbek side Kuruvchi on loan.
Rumor Rating: 3 – It would be a short-term deal (three to six months), so he could conceivably play for Kuruvchi and then make a move to another club in the winter transfer window.
Atletico Madrid look set to make another summer signing, as former Inter midfielder Santiago Solari is set to sign on a free transfer. The former Real Madrid man played at Atletico from 1998-2000 before moving to Real, and his contract with Inter recently expired.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Solari barely featured for Inter Milan last season, and he hasn’t been a full-time starter for quite a while, but it doesn’t hurt to add quality, reliable depth when you’ve got a lot of matches ahead.
Inter could very well soon land Porto’s Ricardo Quaresma, as Porto are apparently willing to lower their asking price. Quaresma’s agent is also expected to go to Milan to have negotiations over a move for the 24-year old, who Porto previously said would go for no less than €40m.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Four years removed from the end of his forgettable season at Barcelona, Quaresma should be a lot better prepared for the second big move of his career.
Inter could also be set to sign a former Porto man in Fluminense defender Thiago Silva. Silva had a short spell at Porto in 2004, and he also played for Dynamo Moscow before moving back to Brazil with Fluminense in 2006.
Rumor Rating: 5 – After resurrecting his career in his homeland and getting into the national team picture, Silva has attracted the attention of several top European clubs, ranging from AC Milan to Liverpool, and even former club Porto.
Fabio Cannavaro’s agent says that it’s likely next season will be Cannavaro’s last at Real Madrid, and that when his contract expires at the end of next term, he could very well be set for a return to Napoli, his hometown and ‘dream’ destination.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Cannavaro came up through Napoli’s youth system and played for the club until he was sold to Parma in 1995, so he would be going back where it all started for him.
Freddy Adu has signed for Monaco on a season-long loan from Benfica. Adu moved from MLS side Real Salt Lake to Benfica last year and scored five goals in his first season in Portugal. However, he wasn’t a regular, and now he’s off to Monaco, who’ll have the chance to buy him at the end of the spell if he impresses.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Adu has yet to really make the splash that he’s been expected to, but he’s still only 19, and if he can get regular first-team action and continue his development both with his skills and mentally, the sky’s still the limit.
Claude Makelele has officially made the switch from Chelsea to PSG.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Chelsea released Makelele to allow him to make the return to France on a free, which is a classy move by the Blues.
Wigan target John Mensah has signed with Lyon in an €8.4m deal. The Ghanaian defender has signed a five-year contract and will replace Sebastien Squillaci, who moved to Sevilla last week.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Mensah also drew interest from Portsmouth, but the lure of the seven-time defending French champions won out in the end.
Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and speculation. What do you think of today’s tidbits? Are Chelsea out of their minds? Will Tottenham land Arshavin? Is Quaresma a good signing for Inter?
