I’m back to give you all the latest in transfer news and rumors from around Europe and elsewhere, and after we all take a moment to digest/laugh at/make some sort of remark on the coincidence of Dimitar Berbatov signing a Manchester United shirt, you can get start getting caught up on today’s headlines.
Arsenal have completed the signing of Manchester United (how many times are we going to hear that over the next… oh, few decades?) defender Mikael Silvestre for £750k.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Rare, rare, rare, indeed it is, but it’s a good move for him, not only because he’ll get to be around many more of his countrymen, but he could prove to have a key role for his new club over the course of the season.
The news seems to be in love with Chelsea today, as there are a number of Chelsea-related tidbits to report, starting with the Daily Mail’s early morning report that a Peter Kenyon sighting in Madrid means that Chelsea are going to tie up Robinho after the chances for a deal seemed to be slim to none.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Not holding my breath here, because that bit can be completely opposite again tomorrow.
At the same time, Chelsea appear to be ready to offload Andriy Shevchenko back to Milan on a loan deal.
Rumor Rating: 3 – If this deal goes through, it’s certainly for the best. Not to say that he still couldn’t be a hit at Chelsea, but he needs to refocus and regain his confidence, and if there’s a place to do it, it’s where he was most successful.
Chelsea are also being linked with a loan move for highly-rated Sporting prospect Fabio Paim.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Paim has a great deal of potential, but it hasn’t quite translated into success just yet. But, if he can impress at Chelsea, this is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Blues.
Djibril Cisse is coming back to the Premier League. The former Liverpool man is moving to Sunderland in a season-long loan from Marseille, where his position as a regular became less than assured despite scoring 22 goals for the club last season.
Rumor Rating: 5 – If Cisse can stay upright and healthy (knock on wood), this is a terrific signing for Sunderland. They’ve been trying to go after a top-class striker throughout the summer, and they’ve got one.
Bolton have made a £3m bid for Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard. Everton and Middlesbrough are also reportedly interested in the 29-year old, but Bolton have made the first move.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Fulham haven’t as of yet decided to extend his current contract, which has two years left on it, and that does well to intensify speculation that’s been going on for a while, with a number of clubs, including Bullard’s old club Wigan, being linked with him throughout the summer.
According to the Independent, Juventus midfielder Tiago has rejected the chance to return to England in a loan spell with Everton.
Rumor Rating: 3 – This one seemed like all but a done deal this week, but it seems that the former Chelsea man is a little hesitant about returning to England.
While Tiago doesn’t seem want to touch Everton with a ten-foot pole, Rennes midfielder Stephane M’Bia appears to be all too desperate to move to Merseyside.
Rumor Rating: 4 – Arsenal are also reportedly now interested in him, but it looks like he only has eyes for Everton. Now if only his desire was the same as Tiago’s….
The Independent is also saying that Portsmouth are trying to sign young Arsenal defender Armand Traore.
Rumor Rating: 3 – It seems that Portsmouth’s targets for the rest of the window are either loan deals or inexpensive signings, which would seem to rule out the likes of Shaun Wright-Phillips, but after seeing four fly into the wrong net at Stamford Bridge, it’s a good idea to go after some defensive reinforcements, whether cheap or otherwise.
Derby have signed Arsenal starlet Nacer Barazite on loan until the end of December. The 18-year old Dutch U-19 international made his debut for the Gunners in last season’s Carling Cup.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The move to Derby will allow him to get valuable first-team experience for a few months, and if he impresses greatly, it could mean he figures into Arsene Wenger’s plans for the second half of the season.
Real Madrid are reportedly trying to strike a deal for Argentine left winger Angel Di Maria. The 20-year old Benfica man has been a big part of Argentina’s run at the Olympics, and that has only served to intensify Real’s interest.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Inter are also interested in Di Maria, but whoever gets him will have to pay a hefty price, as Di Maria has a release clause of €30m, and Benfica will certainly want to make a sizable profit off of him after buying him for €6m last year.
Le Mans defender Marko Basa has completed a move to Lokomotiv Moscow.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The 25-year old Serbian defender was linked with moves to both PSG and Celtic this summer, and looked to be on the verge of moves to both at one point, but he does get to be a part of Lokomotiv’s push to secure at least a UEFA Cup spot in the second half of the Russian Premier League season.
Well, that’s it for another day in transfer news and rumors. As always, I hope there’s plenty to report on tomorrow, but until then, chime in with your thoughts on today’s tidbits, chip in with ones that you’ve read and heard, and make sure you check out the updated summer transfer lists.
