Today, pickings are a little slim in regards to big transfer rumors, but even so, you know you can count on me to bring you what’s in the news.
A few Premier League sides are busy trying to strengthen their numbers at the back as the season gets ready to kick off, and as a result, today’s roundup is filled with defender news and rumors. I know, that’s a little strange, considering that attackers get the glut of the attention.
Without further ado, here are today’s transfer tidbits, and make sure you check out the summer transfer lists to stay updated with the latest confirmed signings from around the Premier League and elsewhere.
Everton Eye Taylor
Everton are set to make an £8m bid for Newcastle center back Steven Taylor. (Daily Telegraph)
Analysis: Taylor has openly voiced his unhappiness with how things are going at Newcastle right now, and though he’s committed as can be to the cause, you can imagine he’d like to be in a much more stable, sane environment.
Fulham Close On Duff
Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed that talks are ongoing with Newcastle over a £4m deal for winger Damien Duff. (The Guardian)
Analysis: Good move for Fulham. Duff’s still got plenty left in the tank, and if he can stay fit, he could play a key role in helping the Cottagers push for another high finish and do well in Europe.
Sunderland Move For Senderos
Sunderland could make a move for Arsenal center back Philippe Senderos. Senderos looked to be close to a move to Everton recently, but that move didn’t materialize. (Daily Mail)
Analysis: One of Sunderland’s priorities this summer has been new center backs, and Arsenal appear all too willing to sell Senderos.
Stoke Target Ba
Stoke City could make a move for Hoffenheim striker Demba Ba. (Daily Mail)
Analysis: Ba won’t come on the cheap, but Stoke’s pursuit of Darren Bent, unsuccessful as it may have been, shows that money might not be an issue.
Wigan Sign Amaya
Wigan have signed Rayo Vallecano center back Antonio Amaya. The 26-year-old has penned a three-year deal with the Latics. (The Mirror)
Analysis: Amaya won’t be counted on to be a regular starter, but he will provide quality depth at the back for Wigan.
Hull Line Up Campbell
If Liverpool meet their asking price for Michael Turner, Hull City could replace him with free agent defender Sol Campbell. (Sky Sports)
Analysis: There might not be anything that comes from this one. There’s a good chance that Turner stays at Hull, since Liverpool might not be too keen on shelling out an eight-figure fee for him.
Newcastle Loan Simpson
Newcastle United have signed Manchester United defender Danny Simpson on a season-long loan deal. (ESPN Soccernet)
Analysis: It’s hard to see him being able to regular first-team football at United for the immediate future, so this is a good move for him. Not only will he get valuable first-team experience that he wasn’t going to get at United, but he’ll get a chance to showcase his abilities and position himself for a future elsewhere, may it be at Newcastle or another club.
Notts County Land Schmeichel
Notts County have signed keeper Kasper Schmeichel from Manchester City for a club-record fee. The 22-year-old has penned a five-year deal with the club. (Sky Sports)
Analysis: Schmeichel never really broke through at Manchester City, but this looks to be a real coup for Notts County. If this is a sign of things to come, it’s not unreasonable to expect them to start climbing the ladder.
Inter Agree Sneijder Fee?
Analysis: Sneijder has shown some reluctance to move, but it would appear to be in his best interests to move to Inter. He’d have a much bigger role at Inter than he’s set to have at Real Madrid this season, but like the rest of his Dutch brethren at Real Madrid, he seems to need a little push to leave.
