It’s a relatively light day today in transfer news and rumors, but there’s still plenty to talk about in today’s roundup.
The Sun says that Tottenham are set to make a £32m move for Valencia’s David Villa, and at the same time will let Dimitar Berbatov go to Manchester United for £30m.
Rumor Rating: 3 – I don’t doubt the possibility of either happening, but we’ll see. That £32m could really help Valencia, but at the same time, United appear to be put off by the high price for Berbatov.
Tottenham are set to make their first significant defensive addition of the summer, as they’re closing in on a £7m deal for Manchester City right-back Vedran Corluka.
Rumor Rating: 5 – It’s a much-needed addition, much more so than a new striker. If you’ve read the roundups throughout the summer, you’ve seen me harp on about Tottenham needing to make defensive signings, so it’s about time.
With a deal for Gareth Barry apparently on the verge of being done, the Xabi Alonso exit rumors are heating up again. Alonso seemed all set to move to Juventus earlier this summer, but Juve turned their attentions elsewhere. Now, it looks like Arsenal have made a bid for the Spanish star, but it’s more in the £10m range, well short of Liverpool’s valuation of him.
Rumor Rating: 3 – Liverpool could very well hold onto Alonso if they get Barry, but if Arsenal can raise their offer a few mil more, then they may be persuaded to sell.
Everton are looking to sign Real Zaragoza’s Diego Milito, but it’s a deal that can’t go through until/unless the sale of Andy Johnson to Fulham is wrapped up. They’ve been interested in Milito for a while, and reportedly put in a loan offer for him, but their hopes of getting him permanently hinge on the Johnson deal not falling through thanks to medical issues that have been mentioned in this space.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Milito would be a great addition, provided he can produce the form in England that he’s had in Italy and Spain. Having a second forward that can net a good 15-20 goals per season would be key to Everton’s chances of breaking into the top four.
Sunderland are closing in on an £8.5m deal for Manchester United’s Louis Saha.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Still may be a little high for him, but if he can stay on the pitch and not on the training table, then he can be a good buy.
Blackburn have signed Manchester United defender Danny Simpson on loan.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Simpson appeared set for Aston Villa, but instead of going to link up with Martin O’Neill, Simpson will get the opportunity to be mentored by a former United star.
Harry Redknapp loves his African players, and he has signed another one in young Gambian striker Omar Koroma.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The 18-year old Koroma got a run-out for Pompey in the preseason, but he’s one for the future, and is already being shipped off to Norwich to get his feet wet this season.
Plymouth are set to sign QPR midfielder Simon Walton for a club-record fee of £750k. The 20-year old should sign within the next couple of days.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Walton is a former Leeds product who spent a year on the books at Charlton before moving to QPR for £200k last year.
Real Madrid have sealed a deal for Hamburg SV’s Rafael Van der Vaart, picking up the 25-year old Dutch playmaker for €13m. Real had a few previous bids rejected, but the final offer was apparently enough to get the deal to go through.
Rumor Rating: 5 – I think you’ve read me complain about the fees that Real were reportedly offering enough to know how highly I rate Van der Vaart.
PSG are closing in on the signing of Fenerbahce striker Mateja Kezman. The deal is set to be a loan deal with a view to a permanent move.
Rumor Rating: 5 – Kezman will come cheaper than Rennes’ Jimmy Briand, and while he is older than Briand, he’s a good bit more proven, even with the unsuccessful spell that he had at Chelsea.
Marseille defender Gael Givet is in talks with Panathinaikos over a move.
Rumor Rating: 5 – The former Monaco captain was a regular for Marseille in his debut season last term, but with Marseille having signed a couple of defenders this summer, Givet isn’t needed now.
Steve McClaren and FC Twente may be holding onto defender Robbie Wielaert. The 29-year old has reportedly agreed personal terms with Ajax, but no fee has been agreed, and the offer of €2m that was made was turned down.
Rumor Rating: 3 – It’d be pretty bad timing if Wielaert were to be sold right now anyhow, considering that Twente are set to take on Arsenal in the Champions League third qualifying round next week.
Well, that’s it for the day in transfer news and rumors. What do you think of today’s tidbits? Could Tottenham get David Villa? Alonso to Arsenal – will it happen? VDV to RM – bargain buy?
Chime in with your thoughts on today’s bits, chip in with ones that you’ve read and heard, and I’ll be back with all the latest tomorrow.
