Tottenham will be playing their first Champions League group stages fixtures against Werder Bremen away from home.

Tottenham Preview

So, the only real Champions League experience comes in the form of William Gallas and Sylvie Rafael van der Vaart.

They saw how European clubs can deliver a nerve wrecking performance when they faced the Young Boys. Werder Bremen, however, is going to be a whole another story. Spurs won’t be able to make a 4-0 comeback in the second leg because there will be no second leg.

Harry Redknapp seems delighted with his side making it to the group stages but he is definitely hoping for more of the same. It won’t be an easy ride through though. Inter Milan and FC Twente complete the group.

Harry said:

“I don’t go through my life thinking I’ve got to prove anything to anybody. I proved what I could do by getting them (Spurs) into fourth place from where we were. My record has not been too shabby.”

Yes, we remember very well Harry. 8 games, 2 points, blah blah.

Werder Bremen Preview

Last time around they missed out a place in the knockout stages of the competition in a group which had two débutantes of the Champions League. Coach Thomas Schaaf will be looking to improve on their result the last time around.

Bremen is said to be vulnerable at the back but dangerous in attack. Also Former Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre is now playing for Bremen and he must have a word or two to say about the Spurs; probably some tactical advice too.

Sylvestre talked about his prospect of facing Peter Crouch:

“He’s got the height to climb above any defender in the world. But his quality will be his position in the box because it’s not only about being taller – you have to be at the right place at the right moment. It’s always dangerous to play against him.”

Injury Update

Tottenham: Ledley King was rested on the weekend so he should be available. It is feared that Luka Modric might have broken his leg but he has traveled with the team. Jermain Defoe is out with an injured ankle, Michael Dawson is out with both knee and ankle injury and Heurelho Gomes is struggling with his groin.

Werder Bremen: First choice center-backs, Per Mertesacker and Naldo are out. Claudio Pizarro is struggling with a muscle injury.
