Chelsea suffered their ninth defeat of the season after losing 2-1 to Leicester City on Monday night.
As expected, Jose Mourinho did best to divert the attention and has placed the blame on his players for betraying him. Throughout the season, he has tried this sly trick, albeit unsuccessfully, which has led to a dressing room instability.
The Blues are now 20 points behind Leicester and 14 points behind Manchester United, and given the fierce competition for the top four places this season, chances are very slim for Chelsea to qualify for next season’s Champions League, unless they win the competition outright.
Mourinho himself has admitted that the top four chances are gone, and says he was left betrayed his own players.
“I feel my work is betrayed,” he said after the match. “I worked four days in training for this match. I identified four movements where Leicester score a lot of their goals and in two of the four situations I identified they scored their goals. I went through it all with the players, you can ask them.”
Mourinho is loved by the Chelsea fans and he certainly wants to stay here and try his best to overturn the situation.
“The only thing I can say is that I want to be. I have no doubts and I think you know me well enough, three years this time, plus three years another time, that I am not afraid of a big challenge, and in this moment this is a real big challenge. I want to stay, I hope Mr Abramovich and the board want me to stay.”
The question is – should he be allowed to stay for the rest of the season? See, there’s no way Chelsea can recover from the mess they’re in. They need to bring in new players, but most importantly the club need to arrest this decline. It needs fresh ideas and outlook.
A new manager may not take Chelsea into the top four, but at least he can bring the positive energy back at Stamford Bridge.
It seems like the players are not responding to Mourinho’s demands. He is a popular figure at the club, but that doesn’t mean he is above everyone else. May be it’s time to say goodbye to Chelsea’s beloved manager for the sake of moving forward.
