When you have Terry Venables’ wealth of experience and expertise as a coach, you can pick and choose your jobs a little more freely than most people. Perhaps he is eager to get back into the game after leaving the England set-up with Steve McClaren, and maybe he is looking for a real challenge to get his teeth into, but is it really the Newcastle United hot seat he wants?
Apparently he is giving the offer of a caretaker job at St James’ Park careful consideration and is tempted to take up the offer. This would suggest that he backs his management skills to the hilt since Newcastle are currently in freefall and riddled with dressing room divisions.
London-born El Tel might like to ask himself whether he would be able to win over the fans who seem to already believe the club has been overrun by a ‘Cockney Mafia’. Even putting geography aside, Venables’ appointment would be made by the deadly duo of Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez. Those are not the right links to have at the moment.
Even if he does somehow manage to do a half-decent job, there are no guarantees that he will be given the job on a permanent basis. The Magpies are in turmoil – without a manager and up for sale. Potential buyers are already making promises about bringing Kevin Keegan back to the club and others will have their own ideas as to who should be in charge.
Do you think Terry Venables can ‘steady the ship’ at Newcastle and get the team into a winning habit?
