Steven Gerrard
For those Liverpool fans upset at this weekend’s loss to Chelsea, I say ‘What are you upset about?’. The loss that Liverpool have just experienced, has ironically just ensured that their long term rivals Manchester United will fail to win a 19th Premier League title this season, overtaking Liverpool’s 18.
By losing against Chelsea, Liverpool have kept their tradition and historical dominance in the Premier League intact, for this season at least. Of course, the title is not quite signed, sealed and on it’s way to Stamford bridge quite yet, but I can’t honestly see them losing, or even drawing to Wigan at home this weekend.
Manchester United fans will have known that realistically, Liverpool were the only team remaining that could help Alex Ferguson’s men to a fourth consecutive title. Oh the irony! It was a win-win situation for Liverpool. Had they have beaten Chelsea, they could have finished the season with some sense of pride and dignity intact, but should they lose, which they inevitably did, they can rest easy knowing rivals United have quite probably seen the title slip out of their sights.
Steven Gerrard obviously preffered the latter situation, realising that his side were still not losing the match, he provided Drgoba with an outstanding assist, slotting it right infront of the Ivorian striker, allowing him to round Pepe Reina and set Chelsea on course for their win.
Of course, I’m not suggesting for one moment that Gerrard would do such a thing, and in hindsight, it was never likely that Liverpool would get a result on Sunday, with the likes of Kuyt and Babel left upfront to find the back of the net. Fernando Torres could only look on in despair from the stands as his stand-ins failed to fill his boots.
After failing to emulate last season’s success, and even failing to reach the final of the Europa League, Rafa Benitez would have no doubt looked to Plan B. Of course, I’m not referring to the increasingly popular rap artist, but to the silver lining still on Liverpool’s horizon. That being the chance to ensure Manchester United fail to overtake Liverpool’s 18 Premier League titles marker.
That silver lining might not be fully set in stone yet however. Yes Chelsea only have to play Wigan on Sunday, and yes they play them at home, and yes they’ve hit a run of extremely intimidating form, but Manchester United fans can take heart from the fact that there have been many unexpected twists and turns throughout this season’s title race, and should there be one more on Sunday, it might just prove the final nail in the coffin for Liverpool’s season.
Dude he might be a die hard Liverpool fan but in a way a true sportsman that should play a true game for his club. I won’t be surprised if he let’s England down in the WorldCup because he did so in Euro Cup not so long ago….It’s sad in today’s sport we have more fans than dedicated sportmen…
What beats me though is you Liverpool supporters are trying to defend a record your’ll can’t even break for so many years now….shame on your selfishness you perves….
first time i am seeing liverpool supporters so quiet…the fans are cheap…as for as i am concerned
I think you’re completely right, and I’m certainly not a Liverpool fan! Blasphemous idea! I’m a man united fan, and couldn’t be more gutted about what happened! But the fact remains, Liverpool fans will have had a great weekend regardless, surely you agree there? Adam
well good article. before the match sir alex said ” liverpool won’t throw their history away” .. well they didnt in the end. they are still equal with us on titles .. so sir alex is never wrong 😛 .. but i hope wigan do us a favour . kirkland and bramble are out so that should be a blow. Glory Glory Man United
Liverpool are no longer one of the “Big Four” – City have replaced them. They are on the same level as teams such as Blackburn and Wolves – and have no realistic chance of winning silverware.
How Gerrard can class himself as a sportsman beggars belief. He may well have just slotted the ball in himself it was so obvious….but hey once a scouser living in the past always a scouser……..
Wouldn’t be suprised to see him turn his back on Liverpool this year and sign up with Chelsea… and why not he was their best player on Sunday.
‘By losing against Chelsea, Liverpool have kept their tradition and historical dominance in the Premier League intact, for this season at least’
-Not entirely true… Liverpool have not dominated the premier league, in fact they’ve never even won the premier league.
They do jointly share United’s record haul of top division titles but that is all.
I actually think it was quite funny to hear Liverpool fans tearing themselves apart over whether or not thwey should ‘let’ Chelsea win, they never had a choice in it, Chelsea are far superior to Liverpool and would have won that game no matter what. Chelsea have been the strongest team this season and have taken 18 points from their games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool, that pretty much says it all..
listen at the end of the day….it was a back pass….he has done it before…it was a mistake…but imo if we diddnt pass back more often than not it wouldnt of happened….but yes i can see why you are upset mancs……but then even on are best day this season we couldnt have beaten chelsea….the same as you lot you got beaten twice by them aswell or have you forgotten that…..we lost 4 more games than you lot the same we do most season…..so stop whinging aabout us not helping you lot….would you of use no way.
Chelsea won us by a dubious offside goal :O
okay, if Liverpool cant beat Chelsea, at the very least lose professionally. lose by a great counter attack or some unstoppable Drogba volley would seem much better on paper.
I also think it would be a bit unfair if anyone were to have a pop at Liverpool’s efforts on Sunday. A few fans suggest that perhaps they ‘wanted’ Chelsea to win.
But i seem to remember it was Liverpool who started the more lively, and created a few chances early on. Until the Gerrard mistake, which im sure it undoubtedly was, Chelsea had not really gotten started.
On form, they were never going to realistically compete against Chelsea over 90 minutes, but they certainly were United’s best chance of ruining Chelseas title chances.
I also don’t think United would ever look to Liverpool for any sort of favour. It just doesn’t happen in football. a fortuitous win, maybe, but Fergie will have never expect any favours from Benitez.
I was partly glad that he did that. It was obvious Liverpool wouldn’t have won anyway. They played extra minutes on thursday, no Torres, so no one to score their goals.. Carragher went off, as did Maxi..
I’m seriously not surprised. But to blame it all on Gerrard is really harsh, as even if he hadn’t have done that back pass, they would’ve won 1-0 anyway.
It was a mistake
Thats it…
& if it really wasnt, it doesnt matter anyway 🙂
Hehehe
Im sooooooo happy Man U fans & That fuckin coach, Fregie are angry!
Its GR8!
I love 2 c u Upset…
I wouldn’t say i’m upset at Liverpool for what’s happened. It was clearly an error on Gerrards part, and where Man United are now is down to their own doing and lack of achievement this year.
No one else can be blamed for that lack of achievement. In general, I would suggest that United fans should be happy with their final position this year. Before the season started, alot of people were suggesting they would finish 3rd or 4th best without Ronaldo.
Instead they have pushed Chelsea all the way, without Ronaldo, and without spending a ridiculous amount of money last summer.
Realistically they were going to finish second at some point, no team can continue winning back to back titles year in year out, it’s just not possible.
It should be a comfort however to United fans that they have proven they can be just as good without Ronaldo
Liverpool gave it their best shot, started well but hadn’t the legs, the personnel or the quality….end of story.
For those who’ve missed the obvious….the article was tongue in cheek!
Chelsea won’t slip-up against Wigan and deserve the title. Utd just fell short but as Adam says….in the circumstances…it was a season that for most Utd fans was better than originally expected.
Thanks Condell,
As you’ve rightly pointed out, the article was tongue in cheek! I’m not literally blaming Gerrard for Liverpool’s loss on Sunday. That would be ridiculous.
I dont think many Liverpool fans would have realistically expected their team to win on the day without Torres, and after playing in Europe just days before. And as I said, Manchester United shouldnt be blaming Liverpool for their season. It’s their own doing, but they should still be happy with what theyve done in the league this year without Ronaldo’s goal contribution
