Liverpool legend and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has encouraged Wayne Rooney to move to the MLS.

After just one season back with his boyhood club Everton, Rooney has been strongly linked with a move to the United States with DC United.

Rooney moved back to the Toffees last summer after he fell down the pecking order at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

Despite not being the player that he was 10-years-ago, the 32-year-old proved last season that he can still perform at the highest level as he went on to strike 11 goals in all competitions for his club from 40 games.

However, he no longer appears to be enjoying football amidst troubles in his personal life.

A move to the less demanding MLS could take the mental and physical strain of the Premier League off from Rooney and allow him to start enjoying his football again.

Gerrard who spent time in the MLS with LA Galaxy in the States after leaving Liverpool believes that it would be a good move for Rooney.

He said: “I hope he does, I hope he makes it. I enjoyed my time at the MLS and enjoyed the life experience,”

“I think where Wayne is now in his career I think it would be great for him and his family to go and settle in an incredible state and see a lot of America.

“It is certainly a life experience I’ll never forget and I hope he goes and has the same.

“The league is a good league, the players are fit and mobile and it is competitive and I enjoyed it at that stage of my career.”
