Slovenia 2-2 USA – Video Highlights

Slovenia 2-2 USA
2010 FIFA World Cup
18 June 2010

The United States would storm back in the second half from an 0-2 deficit and denied a win by a poor referee decision in the final minutes.

Slovenia would start out with the better of play and have a lead after only 13 minutes. Valter Birsa would get some space just outside the box and score with a great shot that beat goalkeeper Tim Howard to the corner. It would get worse for the Americans in the 42nd minute as Zlatan Ljubijankic made it 2-0 with a goal on a counterattack. The goal came only moments after the USA nearly leveled the match.

In the second half, the USA would play much better and cut the lead in half quickly. Landon Donovan would get behind the defense, and score from inside the box with a shot that just went just under the cross bar in the 48th minute. The momentum was now clearly swung in the other direction and the USA would get their second goal in the 82nd minute. It was a cross played in by Donovan then headed by Altidore into the box for Michael Bradley who finished clinically.

It was now 2-2 and a major point of controversy would happen in the 86th minute. A cross from a free kick was sent by Donovan and then volleyed by Maurice Edu for what appeared to be a goal. The referee disallowed the goal but replays show there wasn’t any clear foul by the Americans and more of a case for a penalty against the Slovenians. It was a bad break for the USA and could be costly down the road.

Both teams have one group stage match remaining.
